September 13, 2009       Hundreds Work to Raise Childhood Cancer Awareness

Aimee's ArmyAimee Dickey never knew how her words would be remembered.

The 12-year-old's mom, Annette McKeon, took a deep breath on Sunday morning at Nay Aug Park and began to read a letter Aimee wrote before she died.

"As you know, I am very strong in doing research to find a cure for childhood cancer, so in time, no other parent will ever have to hear 'your child has cancer and there is nothing we can do.' "

The 200 people gathered around the gazebo wiped tears. Some began to sob. Most parents never read letters from their children who have passed away. When Aimee knew she was going to die from her brain tumor, she wrote a letter to her mother, explaining what she thought the goals of her charity, Aimee's Army, should be.

Helmet of HopeSpecial Operations Warrior Foundation (Tampa, Fla.) and The Taylor Brooks Foundation (Lawrenceville, Ga.) have been selected as the latest charities to be featured on the Jimmie Johnson Foundation Helmet of Hope, the race helmet Johnson will wear during the Sprint Cup Series event at Auto Club Speedway in October.

Jacki Wilbourne of Lawrenceville, Ga. nominated The Taylor Brooks Foundation. In choosing this organization, Wilbourne said, "Taylor Brooks was an amazing 14 year old young lady. Even in the midst of her brief time after she was diagnosed with a rare cancer, she organized a Christmas party and raised money to benefit the patients (children), their families and the hospital staff to make their time a little easier during their treatments.

"What a legacy this young lady left and with only eight months to accomplish so much from the time she was diagnosed until the time she passed. This beautiful child touched my heart and has opened my eyes to do more for the community."

Aug. 20, 2009        Amy Klett's The Amazing Hannah written for preschool children with cancer

The Amazing HannahThe Amazing Hannah is a 28-page picture book written by Charlotte, North Carolina's Amy Klett for preschool children ages 1-5 who have been diagnosed with cancer. Designed by Amy Klett's brother-in-law, David Klett, the book is filled with real-life photos of Amy Klett's own child, Hannah, who was diagnosed with leukemia at 2 years of age.

Through the photos and easy to follow narrative, children learn about Hannah's hospital stay, friendly health care team, tests, treatments, and special measures to prevent germs. These concepts are presented in a simple and unintimidating manner that focuses on celebrating the accomplishments associated with each task.

Klett wrote the book in the spring of 2000, just months before Hannah died in October. Realizing how very important it was to honor her daughter's memory and to help other families like her own, she raised enough money to self-publish the book in the spring of 2001. She then sent copies to oncologists throughout the country. In response, she received rave reviews, and, as a result, Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation offered to publish the book in November of 2002, making it available free-of-charge  to any child 1-5 years of age with a cancer diagnosis. The book was also published in Spanish, and both versions continue to be available to children through the Candlelighters website.

St. Jude Children's ResearchHospital scientists lead survey of genome that identifies new genes linked to cancer risk and treatment response

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Scientists at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital have identified inherited variations in two genes that account for 37 percent of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), including a gene that may help predict drug response.

The findings stem from the first complete search of the human genetic blueprint or genome to look for inherited risk factors for ALL, the most common childhood cancer. Published in the August 16 advance online issue of Nature Genetics, the work offers the first proof based on a complete survey of the human genome that inheritance plays a role in childhood ALL.

Aug. 13, 2009        Cancer cluster meeting: Team Unite Family, the Browns meet Sen. Brown

CLYDE, OH (WTOL) - Thursday was a day a Clyde family has been waiting for, a chance to tell political leaders to push for more funding for childhood cancer research.

Warren and Wendy Brown sat down with U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown to talk about their daughter's lost battle with cancer.

"I think I need to share Alexa's story with you," began Warren Brown. He and his wife Wendy detailed their daughter's fight against cancer for the senator as he sat on the Brown's front porch.

The three talked about a recent proposal to actually start to fund a Childhood Cancer Act for an initial $10 million of $30 million committed. Sen. Brown called out the National Cancer Institute. "This is only a small part of what NCI should be doing."

Wendy couldn't hold back her urgency. "But until the $10 million...the $30 million...the symbolic dollars...there's nothing!" Sen. Brown agreed, saying, "Pediatrics has always been under funded."

He says he's working on creating centers of excellence where highly skilled physicians would focus on childhood health problems. By the end of the meeting, Wendy gave Sen. Brown a picture of Alexa.

July, 2009        $10M funded to Conquer Childhood Cancer Act

CureSearch Applauds the U.S. House of Representatives Taking the First Steps to Fund Childhood Cancer Research

Bethesda, MD — CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation applauds The House of Representatives for requesting that $10M be directed to fund pediatric cancer research at the National Cancer Institute. This will provide funding for the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act that was signed into law in July 2008.

Until now, there was no allocation to fund the Act and given the tight economy, it was questionable as to whether the funding would be appropriated by Congress. As a response to this, last month CureSearch hosted an event that brought 450 children impacted by childhood cancer, survivors, their friends and families, and caregivers to Washington, D.C. to urge their congressional representatives to fund pediatric cancer research.

June, 2009       Team Unite Survivor Gives Back to Sick Kids

Karlee

By Jillian Beaudry

DALLAS -- When Karlee Miller was a new student in first grade at Lyle Elementary School, some of her peers called her a boy because her hair was very short.

At that age, the students likely could not understand how strong the young girl standing before them was.

Karlee had been in and out of the hospital for chemotherapy treatments and surgery for 42 weeks and had to relearn to walk with her prosthetic leg. When she first started at Lyle, she was still undergoing scans to check for cancer.

Karlee, now 7, showed her peers that she was just like them by playing with them at recess, swimming in the pool, dreaming of playing sports like softball, and even raising money for other sick children.

"They see me like I'm just a normal kid now," Karlee said.

April, 2009       Blue Jackets' Chimera sees life in a new way now

Winger touched by youth's fight with cancer

Blue JacketsWednesday,  April 8, 2009 3:12 AM
By Tom Reed
The Columbus Dispatch

In the hallway outside the Blue Jackets' locker room, two fathers shared special moments with their boys after Sunday night's game.

Leaning against a brick wall, winger Jason Chimera held his 1-year-old son, Cale. Several feet away, Brad Salmons rested his hand on the back of his terminally ill son, Ryan, who was chatting with Jackets captain Rick Nash.

Chimera had just finished his first home game in six weeks after recovering from a groin injury. He was wearing a white "Ryan's Fight" T-shirt, calling attention to Salmons' struggle against cancer.

It's well documented what the relationship with Chimera and the Jackets has meant to the Grove City family. But when Chimera looks at his first child, he's reminded of what befriending the Salmons family has meant to him.

"It's been a huge reality check," Chimera said. "It makes you realize you have to squeeze every moment out of life. It makes you hug your son a little harder because you never know.

"I have given Brad (Salmons) a couple of hugs, too. I can't imagine what he is going through. But now being a dad, I know what it's like to have a son you love."

Yesterday, Chimera spoke of the perspective gained from a friendship that has come to symbolize a growing bond between team and community. Chimera and Ryan appeared on ESPN on March 27, two days after the Jackets signed the 19-year-old former hockey player to a one-day contract.

The deal came with an incentive clause: two tickets to the Jackets' first home playoff game, should they qualify. Getting a point tonight in Chicago would clinch the franchise's first postseason spot.

"Jason really has taken upon himself to help us get in the playoffs for Ryan," Nash said. "You can see how important it is to him."

Chimera has played two solid games since returning to the lineup. His speed and strength, so critical to his success, are back to where they were before the groin injury on Dec. 17.

He had been enjoying the best start of his six-year NHL career with seven goals and 11 assists in 30 games. Chimera tried resting the muscle for five weeks, but he was tentative, ineffective and frustrated in his first comeback effort.

Chimera underwent surgery in early March and, unable to play, began making regular stops to see Ryan, whom the players had gotten to know during visits to Nationwide Children's Hospital through the Blue Jackets Foundation.

"It has put life in a new light," Chimera said. "You're injured and then you walk into the (pediatric cancer) unit at Children's and you see people really struggling.

Team Unite formed a team and participated in the CureSearch Virtual Walk for 12,500 to Conquer Childhood Cancer! We are proud to announce that, from t-shirt sales, we were able to contribute $750 for our team. THANKS SO MUCH TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED!! We look forward to being able to do more next year!

From CureSearch:

In so many ways, childhood cancer is a journey.  In fact, when children are diagnosed with cancer, they are treated with a “roadmap”.  The “roadmap” includes the dates and dosages and often covers the weeks, months or years of therapy necessary to treat a child with cancer.

As so many of you know, the journey includes ups and downs, long stretches, lots of curves and crashes.  Only through research will we reach the final destination:  Cure.

Thank you so much for joining CureSearch’s virtual journey in support of these children - The Virtual Walk for 12,500.

In honor of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we raised over $108,600 for childhood cancer research.  While we will close the Virtual Walk site today, we will continue each day going forward with you in the same direction toward a cure.

We all know we cannot get there fast enough.

Thanks again from all of us at CureSearch.

During September National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, our challenge is to bring together 12,500 individuals virtually in honor of the 12,500 children who are diagnosed each year.

Think about the ways that childhood cancer has impacted those around you. By participating in this virtual walk you are helping to raise money for childhood cancer research so kids with childhood cancer might be able to reach their dreams. Join the fight today: www.curesearch.org/12500.

We need your support, so join our team, register as an individual or make a donation on our behalf. The minimum to honor one child is $10.

Thank you so much!
